Samuel Baxter came from a broken home and ended up on the street at the age of 14. He was recruited into a circle of criminal occultists devoted to Dormammu. The cultists trained him in arcana to enhance his criminal skills, including anointment in a ritual which caused the spirit of any person he killed to be joined to his own living shadow. He was then hired out to various other criminal organizations to perform contract assassinations as a means of gathering souls for sacrifice.
His ability to manipulate his shadow grew to the point that he could cause it to manifest as a separate being called the Shadow Eidolon. His control over this being allowed it to be a perfect partner in combat, moving and striking in tandem with himself. However, the angry influence of his victims’ spirits limited his ability to control it, leading the Shadow Eidolon to sometimes have a mind of its own.
Dr. Stephen Strange eventually came for the cult, but during the battle the Shadow Eidolon broke free of Samuel’s control. In an effort to spare innocent civilians from its wrath, Samuel put himself in the creature’s path. The Shadow Eidolon left the young man comatose and grievously wounded before its magic wore off. Although the distraction allowed the cult’s masters to escape, Dr. Strange was swayed by Samuel’s heroic effort and took pity on him, and brought him back to the Sanctum Sanctorum to recuperate.
Swearing off the life of crime he once led, Samuel turned his arcane studies to learning to control the Shadow Eidolon more thoroughly. He seeks to make up for the deaths he once caused by using the Shadow Eidolon as a force for good in the world.
6 months ago. It felt like something had punched you in the gut. Rushing to the Sanctum Santorum, you find nothing. The space where it should be simply wasn’t there. The buildings on either side were now right next to each other, but it was if the Sanctum itself never existed. Wong was there, standing in front of the space, holding a bag of groceries. From the look in his eyes you know what that feeling was. Stephen Strange was gone. The world was without a sorcerer supreme. The Sanctum is lost, somewhere unknown along with the Book of the Vishanti and all of its secrets.
Over the past few months, your research in trying to find Strange’s lost artifacts and the missing Sanctum Santorum has revealed an even more startling truth. The ancient and powerful amulet wielded by Doctor Strange hadn’t survived the sorcerer’s passing as you expected it would. The Eye of Agamotto had been shattered!
